A surprisingly accurate representation of the English knightly class.

No, really, I’m not kidding. They only thing that is missing is the horses.

Allow me (the writer) to point out immediately how INACCURATE this representation is of the way the classical knightly class worked, debunking the above statement.

First of all it bears import to mention that I was personally raised into the SCA, a society world wide (INCLUDING antarctic regions) that is based off of recreating the middle ages with some semblance of historical accuracy. I have been legitimately making armor, swinging swords properly and learning the truth of how things were back then since five. I can legitimately say that anyone in the SCA who takes it seriously, in any way, would have a field day in explaining how unrealistic this scenario is. Allow me please to be one of them

Let’s start with their attire. While I won’t doubt that knights had armor, anything THAT fine quality, even in the knightly classes back in the day, WAS OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE. Just the helm on any one of their heads could have equated to decades of legitimate soldier work, slugging it out on the battlefield to pay for the piece of metal that supposedly protects your head. If you died on the field it was not unusual for your lord to have his pages go out after the battle and try to yank the cold steel off your cold, dead head because it was simply worth that much. Then the next knight in line would get it and work the rest of HIS life to pay off the loan, theoretically never paying it off in full. DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE REST. it would simply take too long and should go without saying that any one of those kits of armor, back in the day, would be an investment your entire family line registered for generations in advance and worked every minute of it just to see that suit fall into the hands of someone else after a long battle. Any one of those suits would have been a years pay for the higher nobility. YOU DIDN’T give one away all willy-nilly. I could go on for days how set I would be back then if I found one of those soldiers dead on a battlefield and only took his shin guards (Greaves, for those not familiar with the vernacular) I would either be set for life off the profits of selling them or publicly stoned and decapitated for having stolen them. And one or the other would occur, without fail, within the week

Next let me mention how unlikely it was for English knightly cast to have reliable horses. MOST of their equestrian faire came from countries across the water, from the main land. This was extraordinarily expensive for English lords and they would NOT be willing to give a fine horse up to an aspiring knight under oath to them when they could send out a regiment of green foot soldiers with cheap spears and a sheet of metal on their head serving as a scull cap that cost half as much, don’t need to be trained or broken and have a single trained man at arms to lead from behind. Meanwhile, believe me when I make it known that that single warhorse, would be far more quickly studded off, leading to the nobility in question making TONS more money on the resulting offspring. Theoretically a good stud could pay himself off a hundred times over in his single lifetime. A knight errant could go decades without making more money than the cost of his training and housing by the nobility. Folk back then were very easy to acquire and VERY expensive to properly arm and armor.

FOR THAT MATTER, it is important to note that, for quite some time, everything in England was ruled by the Romans; you know, from Italy. They rolled in with Caesar, murdered anyone who wouldn’t give them their land and took the rest as slaves. Far be it from odd to develop such a territorial streak when most of one’s cultural history is fraught with being taken and fought over shortly before being partitioned off to the highest bidder. The early English and welsh and Celts and Scots all happened to be under the same tyrannical rule; Romans. That’s what brought them to be so quick in later ages to drive anyone out who came into their land. They just didn’t want to lose it again. later on this became such an obsession that it extended to other lands in the island, which began things like the scot rebellion and the irish revolution, etc.

Furthermore, it should be noted that the upper class did quite the bit of fraternizing with “Knaves” back in the day. In fact it was more likely for the knights to come to them and say “Well, as this is your land, we demand the use of your women or else we’ll burn the whole damned place to the ground and claim it as our own.” Most englishmen were NOT shy about encroaching on other lands and honestly didn’t care if you came to their lands so long as you paid your dues to the owners. It was, contrary to popular belief, a VERY simple and not-talked over system. The courtly snobbishness that most folk see the classic english knight carrying himself with didn’t actually start occurring until the middle of the European Renaissance, when knights were already losing their value as dressed up killing machines due to the advent of the firearm. in fact it bears importance to note that most of the nobility back then were almost completely indistinguishable in a lineup from any peasant, if based solely on attire. They all wore woolen breaches, all wore flaxen tunics and all wore a leather belt. The only thing that distinguished nobility from peasantry was the jewelry and metal that you wore, truly expensive things, often small and unnoticeable and you’d only know them from any ol schmo by the crest on their chest, the banner behind them or the hushed whispers you’d hear about them (Followed by the bowing and the groveling for those rare few who were actually in the know) Over half the time the lord of an entire province could walk through “hicksville” and nobody but the town sheriff and preacher could know. They simply weren’t esducated enough. For that matter, the lord probably wasn’t either. Over half the time, even if the peasantry knew, they wouldn’t bow or go out of their way to show respect, They were too busy working to bow, and damned did the lords of the time just want to see that. Busy peasantry who don’t even have time to bow don’t have time to revolt. All is well in anonymous noble land; AKA, England before the dawn of the 14th century.
